How to perform it
- 1Preparation and positioning. Set the rope and high pulley securely, kneel far enough from the stack for uninterrupted tension, and pad the knees.
- 2Starting position. Set the pelvis and hips in the prescribed position, hold the handles/rope without pulling with the arms, and begin with the trunk at a controlled lengthened position.
- 3Concentric phase. Flex the trunk by bringing the ribcage toward the pelvis; keep the hips and arms as quiet as the variation requires.
- 4End position. Reach the same shortened marker without yanking the neck, sitting the hips back, or allowing the weight stack to crash.
- 5Eccentric phase. Uncurl the trunk under control to the defined start while keeping tension and the chosen pelvic position.
- 6Breathing and bracing. Exhale during trunk flexion and inhale during the controlled return; avoid prolonged breath-holding.
- 7Valid rep. A rep uses the same trunk range and hip/arm position, keeps the stack controlled, and contains no arm pull, hip swing, or neck jerk.
Common mistakes
Replacing trunk control with momentum
Fix: Slow the rep and shorten the lever or range until the pelvis and ribcage stay controlled.
Pulling the neck
Fix: Keep the neck long and let the trunk and hips perform the prescribed motion.
Forcing end range
Fix: Stop at the longest range that preserves breathing and spinal/pelvic control.
Rushing the return
Fix: Own the eccentric to the same start marker before the next rep.
Safety
- If spinal symptoms, radiating pain, numbness, or weakness are present, stop and seek appropriate assessment; do not use bracing cues to train through neurological symptoms.
- Adjust the machine to the user, verify the selector pin/attachment and safety stops, and keep hands, clothing, and other people clear of the moving lever, cable, and stack.
Progressions & alternatives
- regressionBodyweight Crunch— Reduce strength, balance, or coordination demand while rehearsing the key pattern before returning to Cable Crunch.
- progressionCable Crunch through a longer controlled range— Increase load, range, instability, or skill demand after Cable Crunch is repeatable through the planned volume with reserve and no technique drift.
- alternativeAb Crunch Machine— Train a similar primary pattern with a different stability, equipment, or joint-loading profile when Cable Crunch is impractical or poorly tolerated.
