How to perform it
- 1Preparation and route. Clear a level route and turning area; verify that the implement, handle, and floor are dry and intact. Choose a load you can pick up and put down without losing position.
- 2Pickup / transfer. Stand beside the load, hinge and bend the knees as needed, brace, and take a closed, centered grip. Use a controlled two-handed handoff when that is safer than cleaning a heavy implement into position. Stand tall with the load on one side and resist leaning or rotating toward or away from it.
- 3Starting position. Pause in the prescribed carry position before moving. Confirm a secure grip, normal visual orientation, and enough clearance from people and equipment.
- 4Walking phase. Walk with short, controlled steps at a pace that preserves posture. Keep the load quiet, the trunk stacked, and the feet pointing in the chosen direction; do not race the set.
- 5Breathing and bracing. Breathe behind a firm but sustainable brace; avoid prolonged breath-holding across the whole carry. Reset posture or stop rather than compensating as fatigue rises.
- 6Turn and finish. Decelerate before turning, use several small steps, and finish fully under control. Avoid pivoting sharply on a planted foot while the load continues to swing.
- 7Setting the load down / valid set. Stop, stabilize, then reverse the pickup under control and place the load in the planned drop zone. A valid set preserves the prescribed position and route for the recorded time or distance without an uncontrolled touch-down.
Common mistakes
Overloading the pickup
Fix: Use a load you can lift and set down with the same controlled hinge and without twisting.
Rushing the walk
Fix: Shorten the stride and make the load quiet before increasing speed or distance.
Losing the stack
Fix: Keep ribcage over pelvis and the prescribed wrist-elbow-shoulder line; stop before leaning becomes the strategy.
Unsafe turn or set-down
Fix: Decelerate, turn with small steps, stabilize, and then place the load in the cleared zone.
Safety
- Clear the route and set-down area, keep bystanders away, and end before grip or balance threatens an uncontrolled drop.
- Heavy efforts and prolonged breath-holding can produce large acute blood-pressure responses; people with cardiovascular disease or uncontrolled hypertension need medically appropriate intensity and breathing guidance.
Progressions & alternatives
- regressionFarmer's Carry— Reduce strength, balance, or coordination demand while rehearsing the key pattern before returning to Suitcase Carry.
- progressionSingle-arm Overhead Carry— Increase load, range, instability, or skill demand after Suitcase Carry is repeatable through the planned volume with reserve and no technique drift.
- alternativeSled push— Train a similar primary pattern with a different stability, equipment, or joint-loading profile when Suitcase Carry is impractical or poorly tolerated.
