How to perform it

  1. 1Preparation and positioning. Adjust the seat, back support, and handle start so the shoulders are comfortable and the feet remain planted. Check the selector pin and keep hands clear of the lever pivots.
  2. 2Starting position. Sit fully against the pad, take a closed grip with wrists aligned to forearms, position the elbows beside the torso, and brace the ribcage over the pelvis.
  3. 3Concentric phase. Press the handles down and slightly back along the machine path by extending the elbows without lifting the torso from the pad.
  4. 4End position / lockout. Finish at controlled elbow extension without snapping the joints, depressing the shoulders forcefully, or sliding forward in the seat.
  5. 5Eccentric phase. Allow the elbows to flex under control to the same pain-free start marker while keeping the shoulders centered and the stack from crashing.
  6. 6Breathing and bracing. Exhale through the press and inhale during the controlled return while maintaining pad and foot contact.
  7. 7Valid rep. A rep follows the same handle path and range, preserves seat/back contact, and contains no torso lift, bounce, or uncontrolled stack contact.

Common mistakes

  • Losing wrist–forearm alignment

Fix: Stack the wrist over the forearm and adjust grip, handle, or range before adding load.

  • Elbows escaping the intended path

Fix: Use a repeatable elbow angle that keeps forearms supportive and shoulders controlled.

  • Creating range with the lower back

Fix: Keep ribcage over pelvis and stop at the shoulder range you can own.

  • Bouncing or dropping the bottom

Fix: Lower under control to a fixed marker and reverse without rebound.

Safety

  • Current shoulder symptoms require an individually tolerated arm path and range; do not force a generic elbow angle or end position through pain.
  • Do not force a deep shoulder-extension or horizontal-abduction stretch; define the bottom by controllable, symptom-free shoulder range.
  • Adjust the machine to the user, verify the selector pin/attachment and safety stops, and keep hands, clothing, and other people clear of the moving lever, cable, and stack.

Progressions & alternatives

  • regressionHorizontal Chest PressReduce strength, balance, or coordination demand while rehearsing the key pattern before returning to Seated Dip Press Machine.
  • progressionBodyweight Parallel-bar DipIncrease load, range, instability, or skill demand after Seated Dip Press Machine is repeatable through the planned volume with reserve and no technique drift.
  • alternativeClose-grip Barbell Bench PressTrain a similar primary pattern with a different stability, equipment, or joint-loading profile when Seated Dip Press Machine is impractical or poorly tolerated.
