How to perform it

  1. 1Preparation and positioning. Use a stable bench, set rack hooks and safety arms, and use a competent spotter for heavy or near-failure barbell work. Secure plates with collars.
  2. 2Starting position. Set stable foot and upper-back contact, take the prescribed grip, unrack to straight arms, and hold the load above the shoulder line.
  3. 3Eccentric phase. Lower the load under control to the fixed chest, upper-arm, or hover marker while the forearms remain well aligned.
  4. 4Bottom position. Reach the same controlled pause, floor contact, or hover distance without bounce; keep the wrists and shoulders centered.
  5. 5Concentric phase / lockout. Press the load to stable elbow extension over the shoulder line without bouncing or losing upper-back contact. For the JM press, keep the path between a close-grip press and elbow extension; do not turn it into a free-falling skull crusher.
  6. 6Breathing and bracing. Brace before the loaded phase, maintain pressure through the sticking region, and exhale/reset only when the load is stable. Avoid prolonged breath-holding across repetitions.
  7. 7Valid rep. A rep uses the same start, depth, pause/hover standard, and lockout with no bounce, spotter contact, unplanned leg drive, or change in load path.

Common mistakes

  • Losing wrist–forearm alignment

Fix: Stack the wrist over the forearm and adjust grip, handle, or range before adding load.

  • Elbows escaping the intended path

Fix: Use a repeatable elbow angle that keeps forearms supportive and shoulders controlled.

  • Creating range with the lower back

Fix: Keep ribcage over pelvis and stop at the shoulder range you can own.

  • Bouncing or dropping the bottom

Fix: Lower under control to a fixed marker and reverse without rebound.

Safety

  • For heavy barbell work, use correctly set safeties and/or a competent spotter and collars; do not rely on a spotter to rescue a technically uncontrolled repetition.
  • Choose a load, range, and setup that permit a controlled return or exit; stop the set rather than compensating through sharp or progressively worsening symptoms.

When to stop

  • The shoulder, elbow, or wrist can no longer remain aligned through the defined path.
  • Range shortens materially, the torso lifts/arches beyond the standard, or the load becomes asymmetric.
  • A spotter, wall, foot, rack, or machine stop provides unplanned assistance.
  • Stop immediately for sharp, electric, or rapidly worsening pain; new numbness or weakness; chest pain; unusual breathlessness; dizziness; or near-fainting.

Progressions & alternatives

  • RegressionCable Triceps PushdownReduce strength, balance, or coordination demand while rehearsing the key pattern before returning to JM Press.
  • ProgressionOverhead Triceps ExtensionIncrease load, range, instability, or skill demand after JM Press is repeatable through the planned volume with reserve and no technique drift.
  • AlternativeClose-grip PressTrain a similar primary pattern with a different stability, equipment, or joint-loading profile when JM Press is impractical or poorly tolerated.
