How to perform it
- 1Preparation and positioning. Adjust the seat/pads and safety stops, place the forefoot securely on the platform, and select a range that will not let the foot slip. Keep hands clear of the moving carriage.
- 2Starting position. Set pressure across the forefoot with the knee angle prescribed by the machine; unlock the safety only after the load is stable.
- 3Concentric phase. Raise the heel through plantar flexion while keeping the foot from rolling and the knee angle from changing.
- 4Top position. Pause at the highest controlled position without bouncing or driving the knee into hyperextension.
- 5Eccentric phase. Lower to the same pain-free stretch marker under control; do not let the carriage force the ankle beyond the chosen range.
- 6Breathing and bracing. Breathe normally behind a stable torso and re-engage the safety before changing foot position or leaving the machine.
- 7Valid rep. A rep reaches repeatable top and bottom ankle markers with stable foot pressure, knee angle, and carriage control and no bounce.
Common mistakes
Bouncing through the Achilles tendon
Fix: Pause briefly at the top and control the full lowering phase.
Rolling the foot
Fix: Keep pressure across the forefoot rather than collapsing to the inner or outer edge.
Changing the knee angle
Fix: Keep the prescribed straight- or bent-knee position constant.
Using the support to pull
Fix: Use the hands only for balance and reduce difficulty if needed.
Safety
- Current hip, knee, ankle, or tendon symptoms call for an individually tolerated range and load; pain is not a cue to force alignment or depth.
- Adjust the machine to the user, verify the selector pin/attachment and safety stops, and keep hands, clothing, and other people clear of the moving lever, cable, and stack.
When to stop
- Foot pressure or the working-side knee/hip path becomes unstable and cannot be corrected at the current load or range.
- Depth or range shortens materially, the pelvis/trunk collapses, or the load/machine path becomes asymmetric.
- Balance, rack/safety position, pad contact, or machine setup changes during the set.
- Stop immediately for sharp, electric, or rapidly worsening pain; new numbness or weakness; chest pain; unusual breathlessness; dizziness; or near-fainting.
Progressions & alternatives
- RegressionStanding Calf Raise Machine— Reduce strength, balance, or coordination demand while rehearsing the key pattern before returning to Calf Press on Leg Press Machine.
- ProgressionSingle-leg Calf Press on Leg Press Machine— Increase load, range, instability, or skill demand after Calf Press on Leg Press Machine is repeatable through the planned volume with reserve and no technique drift.
- AlternativeSeated Calf Raise Machine— Train a similar primary pattern with a different stability, equipment, or joint-loading profile when Calf Press on Leg Press Machine is impractical or poorly tolerated.
