  1. 1Preparation and positioning. Clear the overhead/forward path and place the load where it can be picked up and returned safely.
  2. 2Starting position. Sit with the load at the prescribed shoulder position, wrists stacked over forearms, ribcage over pelvis, and glutes/trunk braced.
  3. 3Eccentric phase. Lower the load to the defined shoulder/start position under control without rib flare or trunk lean.
  4. 4Bottom position. Pause at the prescribed pain-free shoulder range with the forearms supporting the load.
  5. 5Concentric phase / lockout. Press along the prescribed overhead arc and finish with controlled elbow extension and scapular motion.
  6. 6Breathing and bracing. Brace before the loaded phase, maintain pressure through the sticking region, and exhale/reset only when the load is stable. Avoid prolonged breath-holding across repetitions.
  7. 7Valid rep. A rep uses the same start, depth, pause/hover standard, and lockout with no bounce, spotter contact, unplanned leg drive, or change in load path.

Häufige Fehler

  • Losing wrist–forearm alignment

Korrektur: Stack the wrist over the forearm and adjust grip, handle, or range before adding load.

  • Elbows escaping the intended path

Korrektur: Use a repeatable elbow angle that keeps forearms supportive and shoulders controlled.

  • Creating range with the lower back

Korrektur: Keep ribcage over pelvis and stop at the shoulder range you can own.

  • Bouncing or dropping the bottom

Korrektur: Lower under control to a fixed marker and reverse without rebound.

Sicherheit

  • Use only a pain-free overhead range you can control; current shoulder symptoms or marked side-to-side loss of motion require individualized assessment rather than forcing the textbook position.
  • For heavy barbell work, use correctly set safeties and/or a competent spotter and collars; do not rely on a spotter to rescue a technically uncontrolled repetition.

Progressionen & Alternativen

  • RegressionHalf-kneeling Landmine PressReduce strength, balance, or coordination demand while rehearsing the key pattern before returning to Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Press.
  • ProgressionStanding Dumbbell Shoulder PressIncrease load, range, instability, or skill demand after Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Press is repeatable through the planned volume with reserve and no technique drift.
  • AlternativeSchulterpresseTrain a similar primary pattern with a different stability, equipment, or joint-loading profile when Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Press is impractical or poorly tolerated.
